Be Safe! Information for Parents

Course Overview

The purpose of the Be Safe! Information for Parents course is to provide parents and caregivers with high level information about the philosophy of Be Safe! and the contents of the Be Safe! Kit.

Who Should Take the Course?

Parents and caregivers of children aged 5–9.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of the Be Safe! Information for Parents course, participants will be able to identify the goal and key messages of the Be Safe! program, name aspects of healthy relationship development for young children, and access resources for parents and caregivers to help keep children safe.

This course briefly covers six topics:
  1. Introduction to the Canadian Red Cross program, RespectED: Violence & Abuse Prevention
  2. Introduction to the Be Safe! Program
  3. Healthy Relationship Development
  4. Be Safe! Lesson Summary
  5. Be Safe! Resources for Parents/Caregivers
  6. Ten Steps to Creating Safe Environments for Children and Youth
Materials

Free PDF downloads of the Keeping Our Kids Safe booklet for parents and a colourful UN Convention of the Rights of the Child poster in child-friendly language. These two resources can also be purchased as full-colour, glossy printed hard copies.

This short online course is self-paced. On average, the course will take about 15 minutes to complete.

Due to the nature of the program, candidates under the age of 18 need adult support to take this course.

Be Safe! Overview for Administrators

Course Overview

The purpose of the Be Safe! Overview for Administrators course is to provide administrators with high-level information for a successful "whole-school" launch of Be Safe! in their own school or community.

Who Should Take the Course?

School administrators, school district administrators and program administrators.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of the Be Safe! Overview for Administrators course, participants will be able to identify the goal, key messages and approach of the Be Safe! program, understand how to use Be Safe! as part of a successful, whole-school approach to prevent violence against children, identify the steps to handling a disclosure of abuse, and access tools that support the creation of a safer environment for all.

Be Safe! Training for Educators

Course Overview

The purpose of the Be Safe! Training for Educators course is to equip educators to use the Be Safe! child personal safety program with children aged 5–9, comfortably and effectively.

Who Should Take the Course?

Educators and community practitioners who intend on delivering the Be Safe! lessons to children aged 5–9.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to define and understand violence against children, identify the frameworks that help create protection, handle disclosures of violence, take steps to manage risk and prevent violence by building a safer environment, identify the Be Safe! program’s key messages, approach and teaching tools, understand how to cooperatively work with parents on child personal safety (sexual abuse prevention), and comfortably and effectively teach the Be Safe! lessons to children.

The course is presented in four modules:
  1. Course Introduction and an introduction to RespectED: Violence & Abuse Prevention
  2. Violence Against Children - understanding abuse, neglect, bullying, and harassment, the framework for intervention, and prevention
  3. Be Safe! Framework - healthy relationship development; approaching child personal safety from a rights-based perspective; preventing violence through risk management
  4. Teaching Be Safe! - the Be Safe! program, kit components, lessons and key concepts; effective teaching strategies for this topic; handling disclosures; working with parents effectively on child personal safety

The Be Safe! Resource Guide manual and the Prevention in Motion manual as PDF downloads (included, along with access to this online course, with the purchase of a Be Safe! kit).

Evaluation Process

Six brief Knowledge Checks help you assess your learning as you progress through the course. Upon successfully completing all modules, there is a printable certificate for your records.

Course Duration

This online course is self-paced. Participants may leave the course at anytime and can resume where they left off. The duration will depend on the individual participant and their prior knowledge of the subject matter. On average, the course will take about 7 hours to complete.
