Learning Objectives
- The basic venous anatomy of the upper limb as it relates to phlebotomy.
- Demonstrate the appropriate skills and techniques to facilitate asepsis and prevent infection in venipuncture.
- Assemble the appropriate supplies required for blood removal.
- Explain the ‘no blood-spill’ technique of venipuncture on adults.
- Demonstrate appropriate handling and disposal of sharps and prevention of needle stick injuries.
- Demonstrate the skill of venipuncture.
- Be able to summarize the potential complications of phlebotomy techniques and identify appropriate strategies for prevention and management.

This general workshop will be of interest to laboratory assistants, phlebotomists, nurses and other health care professionals involved in blood specimen collection. Students will develop skills in performing phlebotomy procedures in various healthcare settings.
