Learning Objectives:

Students will be able to:

  1. Describe the basic venous anatomy of the upper limb as it relates to phlebotomy.
  2. Identify the various categories of blood tests tubes.
  3. Identify the tubes required for different laboratory tests.
  4. Demonstrate the appropriate skills and techniques to facilitate asepsis and prevent infection in venipuncture.
  5. Assemble the appropriate supplies required for blood removal.
  6. Explain the ‘no blood-spill’ technique of venipuncture on adults.
  7. Demonstrate the skill of venipuncture.
  8. Demonstrate appropriate handling and disposal of sharps and prevention of needle stick injuries.
  9. Students should be able to summarize the potential complications of phlebotomy techniques and identify appropriate strategies for prevention and management.

Description

Phlebotomy Basics Online is an introductory course, designed to assist health care personnel develop skills needed to draw blood samples for laboratory testing. Students explore history, anatomy, blood chemistry and hematology, appropriate equipment required and step by step guide to technique for phlebotomy procedure and such.

In this Phlebotomy Basics Online course, students will also identify potential complications with the procedure and solutions to remedy such complications. They learn how to record and report all pertinent information.

Students demonstrate and practice aseptic techniques while performing phlebotomy on mannequin arms using various needles. Students learn through a combination of theory and practical lab experience.

 

Hands On Practice:

1- Self practice lab time (2 hours)

2- Instructor assist lab time (2 hours)

– Must have an education background in medical/health care studies
– Proof of certificates/degrees/diplomas
– Letter from current employer (medical industry) and only if currently employed

 

This general workshop will be of interest to laboratory assistants, phlebotomists, nurses and other health care proffesionals involved in blood specimen collection. Students will develop skills in performing phlebotomy procedures in various healthcare settings.
